Franz Beckenbauer, a name synonymous with greatness, has left a void in German football. Known as "der Kaiser" (the emperor), Beckenbauer passed away on Sunday at the age of 78. His death is mourned not only by the football community but also by fans around the world.
Beckenbauer's impact on the sport cannot be understated. He was not just a player, but also a successful coach, a respected expert, and a compassionate philanthropist. Throughout his career, Beckenbauer achieved remarkable success, representing West Germany and winning the World Cup and European Championship titles. He also lifted three European Cups, five Bundesliga titles, and four German Cup trophies. His name will forever be associated with Bayern Munich, the club he played for and later served as a coach and chairman.
Born in Munich in 1945, Beckenbauer started his football journey at the local club SC1906 Munich. As his exceptional talent became more apparent, bigger clubs took notice. At the age of 12, he initially planned to join TSV1860 Munich but ultimately chose Bayern Munich. As Bayern rose to become a European powerhouse, Beckenbauer evolved into one of the world's best footballers, a story that would soon become legendary.
Beckenbauer was renowned for his exceptional reading of the game and his remarkable technique. His ability to deliver precise passes with his instep became his trademark. He remained calm under pressure and had an innate sense of timing, making him an influential player on the field. Initially a midfielder focused on scoring goals and creating opportunities, he later redefined the role of a "libero," a playmaker who could have an impact in the attacking third.
During the early to mid-1970s, Beckenbauer led West Germany to their greatest successes. They clinched the European Championship in 1972, with Beckenbauer being awarded the Ballon d'Or. The team is still considered one of the best national sides in German history. Two years later, they triumphed again, this time on home soil, winning the World Cup. Beckenbauer, having already won the European Cup with Bayern Munich in 1967, went on to celebrate three consecutive European Cup victories with the club from 1974 to 1976. He also secured his second Ballon d'Or in 1976.
After his time in the United States playing for the New York Cosmos, Beckenbauer returned to Germany and had a brief stint with Hamburg, winning three consecutive national championships. In 1983, he retired as a player after a short spell in New York, having made 103 appearances for the national team, the most by any West German player at the time.
Beckenbauer quickly found himself in the spotlight again. In 1984, he became the head coach of the West German national team and led them to the brink of World Cup glory in 1986. Despite trailing Argentina by two goals in the final, his team fought back to a 3-2 defeat. Four years later, West Germany triumphed, securing the World Cup as Beckenbauer bid farewell to his playing days as a World Champion.
After a brief coaching spell at Marseille, Beckenbauer returned to Bayern Munich in 1991 as Vice President. In 1993, he took over as interim coach and quickly guided the club to another Bundesliga title. In 1996, he once again assumed the role of head coach midway through the season and led the club to victory in the UEFA Cup. Soon after, he shifted his focus to football management, serving as President of Bayern Munich for 15 years and leading the successful bid for Germany to host the 2006 World Cup.Beckenbauer's personal achievements are just as impressive. He was named the German Footballer of the Century in 2000, won the German Footballer of the Year award four times, received the FIFA Presidential Award in 2012, and was honored by UEFA in the following year. These accolades recognize not just his contributions to the sport but also his commitment to society and philanthropy.UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin expressed the football world's sorrow, saying, "We mourn the loss of the legendary Kaiser. His unrivaled versatility, elegant transition between defense and midfield, impeccable ball control, and visionary style reshaped the way the game was played in his era. His leadership abilities were evident both during his time with the national team and at Bayern Munich's most successful period. Beckenbauer's legacy as one of the greatest players in football history is unquestionable. Farewell to a true legend."
